Cape Town - A cellphone that was found on the scene of the Van Breda murders was apparently used to search for information on axe murders, sources revealed to Netwerk24.

The forensic unit apparently made the find after going through the search histories on cellphones and computers in the house following the murders.

It was not said whose cellphone it was but it was found that someone had searched for information on the axe attack of Peter and Joan Portco in the US. The Portco’s son, Christopher, who was 21 at the time, was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Peter and of leaving his mother severely disfigured.

Attempts by News24 to get comment from the NPA were unsuccessful and the police also refused to confirm the claims.

Nearly two months ago Martin van Breda, 54, his wife Teresa, 55, and son Rudi, 22 were brutally murdered in an axe attack at their luxury De Zalze golf estate home.

Their 16-year-old daughter Marli is recovering at a rehabilitation facility after the attack left her with a severed jugular and a severe head wound.

No arrests have been made but suspicion has arisen around the family’s 20-year-old son, Henri, who was left with only scratches and bruises on his arms that were said to be self-inflicted.

In February, the Sunday Times reported that police believed Henri had a tik addiction and that he spent time in a drug rehabilitation centre in Cape Town last year.

It was also reported that evidence had emerged that Henri only called emergency services four hours after the attack.

Henri had also apparently told family members that he was knocked unconscious in the attack after the attacker threw the axe at him.

On 9 March, the National Prosecuting Authority confirmed it had received the murder docket for the case.
