Vandalism delays Gauteng trains

2011-11-30 18:00

Johannesburg - Vandals were behind a disruption of Gauteng train services this week, Metrorail said on Wednesday.

They burnt R1m worth of cables in the early hours of Tuesday, Metrorail spokesperson Tony Games said in a statement.

Points and signals were damaged.

"This affected all the corridors in the west and east of Johannesburg on Tuesday, including the trains travelling from Pretoria to Johannesburg," Games said.

"Trains were experiencing delays of more than one hour, which inconvenienced hundreds of commuters from all the corridors."

Games said the company's technical team was working on the problem to restore services for the Wednesday afternoon peak period.

"We sincerely apologise to the customers and appeal to the public to help us bring to book those responsible," he said.

Tie those bastards to an electricity cable and turn on the juice.

  • Poloyatonki - 2011-11-30 18:12

Train are running smooth here in Cape Town.

      Adam - 2011-11-30 18:30

@Poloyatonki....Brother, are you saying you have finally seen the light?

      Yar - 2011-11-30 18:44

@Plonky Thank you for pointing that out. The reason is because you have a DA administration there. Soon we should have one here as well.

      Poloyatonki - 2011-11-30 18:50

DA has nothing to do with the way the trains are running... dont get too excited.

      Yar - 2011-11-30 19:04

@ Plonky But it starts with making certain that there is less vandalism and damage to public property.

      Steve - 2011-11-30 19:24

      Train? Only one?

      Yar - 2011-11-30 19:30

@Steve Please excuse Plonker. He am not good with words Actually Number also he struggle with.

      BA - 2011-11-30 21:12

If you took the Gautrain in Cape Town, there's more than a cable problem.

      yolie.Landa - 2011-12-01 09:01

I am sure BA it would no longer be a gautrain in cape town, maybe a capetrain or westrain. Remember Gau is taken from the province name Gauteng

  • mholthuysen - 2011-11-30 18:34

Why not keep the cables on high voltage all the time and electrocute those bastards!?

  • David - 2011-11-30 18:46

Charge them with Sabotage and put them away for a LONG time; then treat those they sell to even more harshly.

  • Malans - 2011-11-30 18:54

The Gautrain is competition for the taxi industry and therefore a target for sabbotage, i.e. the African way of competing. The same goes for the bus services. They will always have problems with industrial action, to the extent that they will eventually give up.

      Sean - 2012-01-09 08:46

it seems like we have our own Mafia cartell here in SA!

  • Guy - 2011-11-30 18:55

working for the taxi owners maybe?

  • David.J.Swart - 2011-11-30 18:56

Why am I not surprised?? Typical of how crime has become a way of life in SA. The criminals do not give a toss because they know that the chances of actually sitting in jail for any length of time is unlikely.

  • Steve - 2011-11-30 19:08

It is such a shame that this fantastic service is disrupted by these morons. The reason for this is of course that they have no jobs and therefore zero income. In reality the whole of Gauteng is a rubbish tip and the sidewalks, roadsides, public walkways and parks are overgrown and look discusting. Why doesn't the government employ these unemployed desperate people to sort out this problem at, I'm sure, an equitable salary/wage and try an eliminate this stupid and dangerous practice of cable theft?

  • Sean - 2012-01-09 09:13

You know what beats me is that this has been going on for such a length of time yet no "Sting" has been set up to combat these pertpetrators onceand for all........ It does not take a rocket scientest to come up with somethimh like this! Place cameras at hotspots and cath these huys out! If you cant do it i can do it for you and would cost a fraction of what you think it couls cost, but you are probably bound by all sorts of beeeaurocracy to hire private investigators to do this for you! But you don't even have to go that far, you can task someone to do this froom your own staff compliment! It doesn't seem to be a priority to you and it would seem that you are more than williiiing to acept the enormous losses incurred and not to mention thefrustration of all your patrons who are simply trying to get to their place of work to earn money for their families. The Gautrain woul probably be targeted and also burnt/de-railed by vandals sooner than later!? Hopefully cameras are installed on the Gautrain to combat such possible attacks or vandalismor other forms of crime as it is in first world countries! Italso also means nothing having security guards on all trains if become involved in the illegal accounts themselves! Hidden cameras should also be erected at all hotspots where cable theft takes place - it is that simple, then these catells could be stopped in their tracks, because one often hears that cable thewft often takes place at the same places on a regular basis!
