Johannesburg - Large parts of Centurion in Gauteng were without electricity since early on  Sunday morning due to the Brakfontein substation being vandalised, the City of Tshwane said.

"The areas affected are Brakfontein, Rooihuiskraal, Amberfield, the Reeds, Noordwes, Thatchfield, and Wierda Park," spokesperson Moeketsi Bokaba said in a statement.

"The City's technicians have been on site since this morning. Because of the severe damage, repairs can take two to three days."

Affected residents were urged to report power failures to the municipality via text or calling the municipality.

"Consumers are advised to treat all electrical points 'as live'. Switch off all non-essential appliances to assist with the load on the electrical network," Bokaba said.

"The City apologises for the inconvenience caused. It is unfortunate that the City's residents must endure the disruption of services as a result of criminal actions."
