Vavi reveals his salary

2012-04-21 09:31

Johannesburg - Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has revealed that he earns R500 000 per year, Beeld newspaper reported on Saturday.

He did so after he came under fire on Twitter over his salary, and had even taken personal security steps.

Vavi said the Congress of SA Trade Unions paid good salaries to prevent its leaders from accepting government positions.

He said he earned R500 000 a year and was often accompanied by armed guards when going somewhere.

"I can't live in a house today without electric fencing and an alarm."

He said this became necessary after he received death threats in 2006.

Vavi said his salary was "much lower" than that of cabinet ministers and chief executives of private companies.

And? This man does a lot more than most others to keep government honest. He deserves it.

      Peter - 2012-04-21 09:53

      Very true

      madsipho - 2012-04-21 09:56

Oh Yeah, and that kid Julius Malema was earning more than Vavi just for shouting to the crowds.

      Amanda - 2012-04-21 09:59

For everything this man does, he deserves that salary plus more. The municipal manager of the Naledi municipality,Nceba Thukane, gets R900 000 and there is no service delivery and corruption is rife. Even Malema was "earning"more than him, thanks to corruption.

      spartanx93 - 2012-04-21 10:01

Disclose your other interests as well.

      Nigel - 2012-04-21 10:36

i agree he earns it, he does more than most useless corrupt Govt officials & he doesn't steal it like some lying ex ANC member, but I don't agree with Cosatu's labour practices, they are killing business & throttling jobs,

      Jason - 2012-04-21 10:52

Agreed he does deserve more when you compare what he does to others who get more then twice as much.

      TheMonk - 2012-04-21 12:00

Vavi does more than all the cabinet ministers put together. He deserves it.

      Brandon - 2012-04-21 12:04

There is nothing wrong with his salary. For the amount of work and risk that oke goes through, totally justified! It is in most cases a lot less than most government officials.

      gauchet1 - 2012-04-21 14:32

Kev, He needs to be paid by government, he deserves more

      rbphiri - 2012-04-21 18:51

and Malema earned more just by being simply...well a Juli-Arse. Taxpayers' money wasted on a dumb purple suit, his making Barney the dinosaur look bad. And after the completion of his butth0le mansion, im going to enter his property when ever I feel like it, it's our money that erected that house.

      thozi - 2012-04-21 23:11

You mean he deserves much more than that. For a guy who used to be perceived as a rogue in the days-gone-by, but turned into being South Africa's saviour and protector, he deserves as much as Deputy Ministers at least - with all the perks.

  • Struan - 2012-04-21 09:35

That's what his salary is that's probably not what he earns in totality. In all fairness for the amount of people he has to lead that is peanuts.

      Brandon - 2012-04-21 13:22

Agree. He is a taxpayer like us. Far less goes into his pocket.

      rbphiri - 2012-04-21 18:57

If you want to see where your money is going, just look at the beer bellies in parliament. These cash cows graze will never get full, they have 4 stomachs after all, that's why they implement more tax molestation systems to deprive us of our greener pastures, carefully hidden in our bank accounts, but no some political farmer had to introduce his cows on to our land, to rape us of our green.

      Jonathan - 2012-04-21 22:19

I'm just curious...Is that BEFORE or AFTER TAX? any Endorsements? Because if not then it's not that much.

  • sean.redmond3 - 2012-04-21 09:38

But a lot higher than a few million of your members who pay subs every month.

      Marion - 2012-04-21 10:28

Sean - higher but not excessive. Think what a cashier at Shoprite Checkers / Checkers Hyper earns and look what Whitey Basson earns. Something like R640 million a year vs at best R50 000 a year.

      Maliviwe - 2012-04-21 10:33

The man deserves better than he earns, we have Government Managers that they earn fat Salaries but doing nothing as compared to their staff as they are doing all the work for them.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-04-21 11:50

      Marion, Spot on !!

      Tsotsi - 2012-04-21 12:29

U thought he will be earning 15k a month? Hes a general secretary for the biggest UNIONN.Lot higher? Its reality,Farmers makes a lot higher than employees,Minister of education makes a lot higher than teachers,Shoprite managers than workers?

  • Sharon - 2012-04-21 09:38

I wonder how he feels when he compares his salary to those of the snotnoses at the NYDA. I think he earns every cent.

  • butlershannon - 2012-04-21 09:39

    I agree with u kevin

  • Dave - 2012-04-21 09:40

    He deserve every cent.

      Brandon - 2012-04-21 13:33

      Definately!

  • Thapelo - 2012-04-21 09:41

at least im angry of his salary i do not know why?

      Brandon - 2012-04-21 13:36

500k a year is not much for a manager in the PVT sector managing 120 staff. Vavi is representing over 2 million people!? Go figure...

      Rational100 - 2012-04-22 11:08

His salary means nothing....it's his wealth that matters..

  • pws69 - 2012-04-21 09:41

Not a lot for his position, but completely at odds with his publicly proclaimed ideology. Animal Farm anyone?

  • bluzulu - 2012-04-21 09:41

So little, This Gent deserves another digit added to the current Salary.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-21 11:11

Unfortunately every comment you have posted is incorrect....par for the course yeah.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-21 11:50

hehehehehehee.............Amazingly I somehow didn't expect a proper response anyway. Nice to know detractors are all cut from the same cloth.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-04-21 11:56

Leonardb1, That is a silly, comment you make. Bluzulu is quite right, 500 000 is not excesive at all, when one compares it with government or private buisness salaries. What about the CEO's of our banks ??? 8 to 10 MILLION a year !!!!!!!!

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-04-21 15:39

Leonardtb1, But now you change the debate, it is no longer a matter, if one in such a position ,should, earn such a salary, but now, if 'he" is worth it. Than it would be very interesting to go and analize all ,high ranking, government officials and the CEO's of all major companies, if they 'deserve' their salaries. If one ,likes, unions or not, one must accept, that they play a vital role in a democracy !!!

  • Muhammed - 2012-04-21 09:53

I think that his salary is justified...

  • Brad Frank - 2012-04-21 09:57

    well deserved

  • Christopher - 2012-04-21 09:57

Half a million well others earning less than 25000 a year.how can u fight 4 di poor well u earn so much cum on vavi don't be buyers man'u should hv earn R3500 so dat we can hear u.\r\nU been exposed by di NEWS24 n u r no longer speaking on our behalf[poor]

      Nigel - 2012-04-21 10:41

er Christopher - id like to hear your opinion of Malema then, he claims to be the "prince of the Poor" but he has R 53 Million in the bank, how do you feel about him?

  • Archie - 2012-04-21 10:06

So what are you and your wifes total packages?PERKS etc? a lot more i would bet

      Marion - 2012-04-21 10:32

@Archie - what his wife earns is not relevant. Obviously the man would have additional perks, just like most people in management positions have. He said this is what he earns and that has been interpreted to salary, not package in this article.

  • Zighom - 2012-04-21 10:10

Fair enough. I can't live on that salary personally, for his salary I can just pay all my bills only. its almost 42k pm gross after tax he's got may 35k. Things are expensive ths days. A decent car will cost you ten to ftfteen k, same with a house, then you have family stuff etc..

      Izak - 2012-04-21 10:38

10 to 15k for a car?! Geez what are you driving? I havs resolved long ago that I will drive old and/or secondhand cars until the house is paid. My car payment is 2.3k, the house is about 12k. With all the insurance one needs, taxes, the kids, armed response, a combined household salary of 42k a month is just enough to make ends meet. Half-a-mil just isn't a lot of money anymore.

  • Ian - 2012-04-21 10:10

and he calls himself a commie, a commie thats loves money bwaaaa haaa loser

      Matthew - 2012-04-21 13:20

All commies love money! The higher up the red-tree they are, the more money they have. Also the inverse is true. The lower down the proletariat, the less of everything you have.

  • catgirl1971 - 2012-04-21 10:19

And here I try to make ends meet on a lousy R136 632 pa .... AND I work for the government!!!!

      Grant - 2012-04-21 12:25

@catgirl: Take what you earn and multiply it by 4 - that's about what Vavi earns. Now you need to think that the work Vavi does is thousands of times more important than the job you do, whatever that may be. Thanks to people like him, thousands of people like you get to earn and live better.

      Ilze - 2012-04-21 13:05

Good one Grant! Shame Catgirl, Pity there's no meds for stupidity!

  • George - 2012-04-21 10:20

Vavi, your salary is too low but then what are your fringe benefits. You will not be able to afford e-Tolls (on your salary) like so many other SA citizens. DO NOT REGISTER. NO-E-TOLL, DO NOT PAY FOR WHAT IS ALREADY YOURS. The ancestors are very angry over SCAMRAL and are making people mad.

      kasper.mbayi2 - 2012-04-21 10:59

Mr Vavi you deserve your salary. You work hard for poor SA citizens. Be stronger in your efforts we back you up. The best day for our protest is 27th.to show the world we not free in SA.

  • Marion - 2012-04-21 10:25

R500 000 is peanuts for a man in such an influential position, particularly if it is his gross salary. Now some others should be truthful about their income.

      phosa.peter2 - 2012-04-21 13:45

I agree with you lady m.diz man 'walk de talk'.

  • Scallo - 2012-04-21 10:25

Vavi deserve the salary he is the most vocal man on this etoll thing nd is not a secret that he have some companys somewere, check anc cabinate they all hav shares in big companys nd hav they own company stop been negative towards vavi

  • Rorshac1987 - 2012-04-21 10:25

this reminds me a lot of Animal Farm

      Bertus - 2012-04-21 10:50

Hasn't SA's script always been that of Animal Farm since post-democracy?

  • Stanley - 2012-04-21 10:27

WELL DESERVED...IT'S ONLY THE UNEDUCATED WHO WILL SAY IT IS ALOT OF MONEY FOR THAT POSITION!!!

  • FeebleGastro - 2012-04-21 10:28

Only a tiny part of his total income. He and his wife are as corrupt as the rest of them.

      bigstanrevolver - 2012-04-21 10:46

Do you have any factual foundation for this? Take it to the police... Let them be prosecuted!

      FeebleGastro - 2012-04-21 11:00

What do you mean, corruption is no crime, its part of the job, here in Africa.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-21 11:14

      Delusion paranoia, Got any proof?

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-04-21 12:10

Sure corruption is big in SA, But to accuse someone of corruption without any proof, is pretty dispicable !!!!! Shame on you !!!!!

  • Skhumbuzo - 2012-04-21 10:29

    I think it's fair...

  • Ian - 2012-04-21 10:33

And you have union members earning R2500.00 a month. Don'nt you feel bad that they pay you this much Mr Vavi. You are earning a salary (41000.00) of 20 people a month. Are you happy with that comrade?

      sdsibu - 2012-04-21 11:42

grow up man, he can not lead and earn peanuts, as he is now

      Ian - 2012-04-21 11:59

Thank u. That means he is happy there are poor people as his job is guaranteed. I wonder if he is really fighting for the total eradication of poor people. His job will history. Hope you too, grow up.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-04-21 12:19

Ian, your comments are just plain silly !!

  • Barefoot - 2012-04-21 10:35

tell me if 'm wrong but since Vavi is not a member of government he is in no way obligated to disclose is interests to any one more so his salary but he did anyway so people screaming that he should disclose his interest take a breather think first

  • Olebogeng - 2012-04-21 10:35

    Let others reveal theirs.

      ntsepep - 2012-04-21 10:51

I would like to know how much sdumo dlamin earns, his no good chair

  • Hans Heydra - 2012-04-21 10:40

Is that 500k gross or net? If it's 500k net it would be 680k gross. Even at 680k gross it's still fair given his position. A communist in a capitalist country still has to play by capitalist rules. As long as there's nothing else going into the back pocket I don't see the fuss.

      Hans Heydra - 2012-04-21 10:48

I'm not saying Vavi is a communist. It was in reference to a reply lower on the page.

  • Jacqui - 2012-04-21 10:49

That's about the right amount for a communist. You know the ones who are always telling us that there should be equality for all.

  • Peter - 2012-04-21 10:54

How many of the estimated 3 million membership earns close to that ? What has he done for its members ? The labour law covers the whole spectrum.....Cosatu only collects levies to pay their big dudes big salaries and the rest on buying t-shirts and buildings. What about his allowances and perks ??

  • Renier - 2012-04-21 10:55

    He deserves it.

  • Dipzen - 2012-04-21 11:01

This man has shown that he has nothing to hide people asked him to disclose his salary he has done that, which he was not obligated to do. now they ask for his other business interests I bet he will do if he wishes to. But again when it comes to his wife it might be a different story because spouses aren't always honest with each other when it comes to money, thus we should commend Mr Vavi for sharing his with the public. For those who think its a lot of money guess you are all clueless on how much people in top positions earn regardless of whether its a communist party or not. You only need to look at this man's fight for the poor and the middle class to see that this man is doing more in a year than what JZ can do in two terms in office.

  • Sanele Kratos Fulele - 2012-04-21 11:04

  • steve.mogoru - 2012-04-21 11:19

He deserve this salary he represent poor south africans and poor sa worker.good leader deserve good salary

      Ian - 2012-04-21 11:45

@Steve, you say he deserves the huge salary because he represent poor people but you say nothing about people themselves. So as long as there are poor people, his job is guaranteed. This means he will fight to all people have a decent wage because his job will be over.

  • Lerato - 2012-04-21 11:21

  • martyn.kilian - 2012-04-21 11:24

I have no problem with him earning that amount. He deserves it!!!! But pls mr Vavi, stop calling yourself a communist - your salary is market related - that is called capitalism.

  • Paul - 2012-04-21 11:40

  • Elkita - 2012-04-21 11:59

  • Onke Dali - 2012-04-21 12:10

    500k sounds just about right.

  • Tsotsi - 2012-04-21 12:13

      Daniel - 2012-04-21 12:40

  • Barry - 2012-04-21 12:23

"Earning" a salary and "being paid" a salary are often two completely different things. And there is no mention of the no doubt numerous perks - housing, travel, medical, security, schooling, subsistence etc. etc. etc.

      You now this how Barry?
