Johannesburg - A 62-year-old man appeared in the Evander Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl, Mpumalanga police said.

According to police he allegedly raped the teen twice in April.

Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala said the man would remain in custody until his bail application on 16 July.

The first incident occurred while the girl was selling vegetables house to house in Embalenhle, near Secunda. When she arrived at his house, he invited her in and told her he was going to fetch money.

He then locked the door and allegedly raped her.

Mohlala said: "He then ordered her not to tell anyone or he would kill her.”

Later that month she met him on the road and he took her to his house where he allegedly raped her for a second time.

"The victim's mother noticed a strange discharge from her while she was applying an ointment for mosquito bites. She took the victim to the local clinic for medical examination, when it was discovered that she was rape," he said.
