Durban - A Durban vendor turned hero on Monday afternoon when he attempted to save a truck driver from burning to death.

Striking workers from Vector Logistics allegedly hurled a petrol bomb at the truck, which was offloading goods at Shoprite Checkers in Anton Lembede (Smith) Street at the time.

The hero, who would only identify himself as EB, grabbed bottles of water and attempted to douse the flames and save the driver from further burns.

The 40-year-old driver was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition, having sustained severe burns.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the truck driver was making a delivery in the city centre when striking truck drivers allegedly threw a petrol bomb at the truck. The bomb went into the cab, where the driver was seated, and detonated.

Captain Khephu Ndlovu, head of communications at the Durban Central police station, said: “The truck that was petrol-bombed belongs to Vector Logistics. The incident occurred as a result of striking truck drivers from Vector Logistics.”

A case of arson and attempted murder was opened.

No arrests have been made.
