Johannesburg - Mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane will climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Caring4Girls and youth leadership development programmes, the City of Ekurhuleni said on Monday.

The city would sponsor Vilane's climb as part of the Trek4Mandela campaign, spokesperson Sam Modiba said in a statement.

The campaign, announced on Monday morning, would provide 500 underprivileged secondary school girls with a year's supply of sanitary towels.

Vilane said: "When I was invited to climb Kilimanjaro for a cause that will give many girls their dignity back, I didn't hesitate."

He said millions of girls suffered because they could not afford sanitary towels, and some were forced to stay away from school because of this.

The campaign was part of the city's Nelson Mandela Day effort.

The mountaineering team was handed the Ekurhuleni flag, to be planted on the mountain's peak. Vilane and his team would depart for the six-day mission on Saturday.
