Vile video surfaces at UFS

Bloemfontein - A video of University of the Free State (UFS) employees on their knees eating meat which had been urinated on was condemned "in the strongest possible terms" by the university on Tuesday.

The video, made by the Reitz men's residence, surfaced on Tuesday morning and follows riots by the students at the campus last week about the university's hostel integration policy.

"The executive management (EM) of the UFS condemns this video in the strongest possible terms as a gross violation of the human dignity of the workers involved," said the university in a statement on its website.

Democratic Alliance spokesperson Liana van Wyk, who had seen the video, described it as "shocking and inhumane".

The video shows four white male students taking four black, elderly, women workers and making them down a bottle of beer, run a race, play rugby and then kneel and eat meat which had been urinated on, she said.

"It looked like they were willing (participants), but they didn't know the purpose the video served... it was quite humiliating at the end to see the quite-senior ladies on their knees eating the meat."

The men's residence had chosen integration as the topic of the video they were asked to make.

JR.lenoir says... @Dewald, I am a geologist (been one for nearly 13 years now). I'm well-aware what the distinctions are between palaeontology and archaeology are. Both of which I have an interest in. When people use palaeontology to describe archaeology, it absolutely baffles my mind. It's like saying a civil engineer is a mechanical engineer. There's certainly overlap in geochemical techniques, but the two disciplines focus on very different elements of our natural history. In a nutshell (and heavily simplified) for those who are unaware, palaeontology deals with the evolution of natural life on this planet. Archaeology deals with the pre-history of our species, how we became to be human, prior to recording our history. Read the article...
