Johannesburg - Two policemen working in the VIP Protection Services unit in Arcadia, Pretoria, were released from jail after paying bail of R3 000 each, police said on Saturday.

The pair appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Friday for reckless and negligent driving, attempted murder and discharging of a firearm, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

"They were recklessly driving a VW [Volkswagen] vehicle on the N12 between Ikageng and Klerksdorp during the week when they then forced an Uno driver to pull over. They quarrelled with him [about his driving] and then shot the wheel of his vehicle. They then got into their car and drove off," said Ngubane.

Police were informed about the incident and attempted to trace the vehicle.

The two VIP policemen then drove into Ikageng where they changed vehicles.

Police again traced and pursued them.

They were arrested near Wolmaransstad, said Ngubane.

It was found that the car the officers had initially been travelling in was an unmarked police vehicle.

"They claimed to have been on duty and were going to pick up a vehicle in Kimberley," said Ngubane.

He could not say when they would next be appearing in court.
