Johannesburg - A police officer accused of raping a 14-year-old girl has been granted bail by the Paarl Magistrate's Court in the Western Cape, SABC news reported.

The 41-year-old officer was released on R1 500 bail on condition that he does not contact the alleged victim, her family or members of his church.

SABC reported that the court found there had not been enough evidence to deny him bail after the State indicated he might interfere in the investigation.

The officer has been suspended from the police and from pastoral duties at his church.

The officer allegedly raped the girl several times in April.

He faces four counts of rape.

The crimes were reported to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate on 9 July and the officer was arrested the following day.

The officer has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case was postponed to 6 August.
