Johannesburg - The death toll in two accidents in the Southern Cape this week rose from six to eight, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said two people injured in the crashes died in hospital on Tuesday.

In the one crash, three men and a woman died when their car collided head-on with an ambulance on the N12 on Monday.

The people in the ambulance were taken to hospital, but one of them, a 55-year-old man, died in hospital on Tuesday.

In the second accident, on the N2 on Monday, two of three men in a Fiat Uno died when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which swerved across the road and hit the rear wheel of a truck.

The Uno then hit the side of a car.

Pojie said the third occupant of the Uno died in hospital on Tuesday.
