Cape Town - A total of 1 205 people were arrested for crimes ranging from burglary to attempted murder and rape during a three-day crime prevention operation across the Western Cape.
Police, city police, traffic police, the defence force and neighbourhood watches took part in the operation which ended on Sunday.
The operation, dubbed Tswikila, will continue for the "next couple of months".
Deputy national police commissioner André Pruis, who is in charge of Tswikila, said the public could expect to see large numbers of law enforcement officers in action.
"Criminals can expect to be targeted without respite," he said.
During the three-day blitz 13 illegal firearms were seized along with 137 rounds of ammunition. Six stolen motor vehicles were recovered.
Various amounts of drugs were seized, including 188kg of dagga, 245 Mandrax tablets and 55 ecstasy tablets.
