Johannesburg - A man died when his light aircraft crashed on Saturday afternoon near an airfield by Infanta, along the Breede River between Cape Infanta and Swellendam, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The NSRI, police, Western Cape emergency management services and municipal fire and rescue services were notified of the crash around 13:15, said spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

"It is suspected, from reports, that the accident happened shortly after the light aircraft became airborne from the airfield."

When paramedics and emergency services arrived on scene, the wreck of a light aircraft was found with the body of the man inside.

"It is believed that only the pilot was in the airplane at the time of the accident," said Lambinon.

"The scene is under the authority of the SA Police Services and it is NSRI's understanding that the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) has been activated."
