W Cape needs 28 new schools
Cape Town - The Western Cape needs about 28 new schools, education MEC Donald Grant said on Thursday.
He was announcing the results of a province-wide audit of facilities.
He said a single tender would be advertised soon for the construction of 12 schools, starting in 2011.
These would be in addition to the building programme now underway.
Four schools were currently under construction in the province and another six were out on tender.
Putting 12 schools on one tender reduced building and procurement costs, dramatically decreased the professional fees for each school, and sped up delivery.
The department would also build about 200 new classrooms at 50 schools in the metropolitan area of Cape Town.
Mobile classrooms would also be used to alleviate overcrowding at some schools.
