Arrest warrant issued for Mandla Mandela

2012-08-20 20:00

Johannesburg - Troubles keep piling up for troubled Thembu chief and MP Mandla Mandela as a warrant of arrest was issued against him on Monday.

The grandson of former state president Nelson Mandela is being sought for failing to appear in court today for failure to pay R12 500 maintenance to his first wife, Tando Mabunu-Mandela.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the chief had missed three monthly payments to his estranged wife.

“In court today [Monday], maintenance investigator Mr Agrippa Gameni Mvelase informed the presiding Magistrate Mdodana that Mr Mandela refused to accept summons when they were served to him on 11 July 2012,” he said.

Mandela and his wife are in the process of divorce, which is being complicated by a tussle over assets. He was ordered by the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha to pay for his wife’s upkeep, pending finalisation of the divorce.

Mabunu-Mandela has also frustrated attempts by her husband to take multiple wives, including successfully annuling one marriage and interdicting another.

On Monday the State applied for the maintenance court magistrate to grant a garnishee order to deduct the R12 500 from his salary as well as a warrant of arrest after Mandela had failed to appear in court.

“Magistrate Mdodana granted the garnishee order with effect from 15 September 2012, and authorised the warrant of arrest.

"The case was postponed to 20 September, pending the arrest of the accused person,” Tyali added.

At the weekend, Mandela was in China where he was a judge at the Miss World beauty contest. It is not clear when he will return to South Africa, and his publicist, Chabo Pelusa, could not confirm this.

He referred all questions to Mandela, who could not be reached immediately.

Mabunu-Mandela could also not be reached through her legal representative.

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-08-20 21:02

Sad that. All that history, all that education, that's all the 'work' he can find

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-08-20 21:10

Lacrimose he also has another job, he is an MP. It pays exceptionally well approx R700 000 pa and attendence at work is not compulsory. It requires that you do nothing and as long as you dont piss off the party whip you will not get fired. It also allows you to take on work on the side even duirng working hours.

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-08-20 21:12

See my comment above, it constitutes about 23% of his pay.

      rick.kabose - 2012-08-21 09:47

Article is a bit ambiguous , is it R12.5K per month or accumulated over 3 months. She deserves the money if she had to make nooki with someone that revolting

What is it with these guys and their multiple wives? Not to mention all the girlfriends on the side. What kind of example do they set? No wonder our people are infected by Aids.

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-08-21 00:14

Apparently he is infertile and being the "brain surgeon" that he is he thought that if he took a few concubines he would some how father a child. When one of the concubines became pregnant and had a child it turned out to be the product of an affair between his brother and the concubine who has now left and returned to Reunion wher she was from.

  • Vince.York - 2012-08-21 06:35

Why does he look so alike to the other beauty 'Robert McBride'? with similar intent in that focused look.................... and would YOU accept a summons while on the job with a bevy of other mere chattels, women? What a society we have - world leading notions!

  • beverly.young3 - 2012-08-21 06:45

Honestly, why does it matter whose grandson he is? Having a 'famous name' does not automatically qualify him in any shape or form. He is disgusting. He assumes he is beyond the norm and is protected, as it seems now by the government. His grandfather is tooold to understand this, if any one told him. On the other hand, look around the world and the same applies to so many children of famous people....they all think they are 'entitled' to whatever they grab and spoil...we are such a joke abroad. We give so much publicity to people like him ugh...

  • sisie.indola - 2012-08-21 07:17
