Johannesburg - Troubles keep piling up for troubled Thembu chief and MP Mandla Mandela as a warrant of arrest was issued against him on Monday.

The grandson of former state president Nelson Mandela is being sought for failing to appear in court today for failure to pay R12 500 maintenance to his first wife, Tando Mabunu-Mandela.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the chief had missed three monthly payments to his estranged wife.

“In court today [Monday], maintenance investigator Mr Agrippa Gameni Mvelase informed the presiding Magistrate Mdodana that Mr Mandela refused to accept summons when they were served to him on 11 July 2012,” he said.

Mandela and his wife are in the process of divorce, which is being complicated by a tussle over assets. He was ordered by the Eastern Cape High Court in Mthatha to pay for his wife’s upkeep, pending finalisation of the divorce.
Mabunu-Mandela has also frustrated attempts by her husband to take multiple wives, including successfully annuling one marriage and interdicting another.

On Monday the State applied for the maintenance court magistrate to grant a garnishee order to deduct the R12 500 from his salary as well as a warrant of arrest after Mandela had failed to appear in court.

“Magistrate Mdodana granted the garnishee order with effect from 15 September 2012, and authorised the warrant of arrest.

"The case was postponed to 20 September, pending the arrest of the accused person,” Tyali added.

At the weekend, Mandela was in China where he was a judge at the Miss World beauty contest. It is not clear when he will return to South Africa, and his publicist, Chabo Pelusa, could not confirm this.

He referred all questions to Mandela, who could not be reached immediately.

Mabunu-Mandela could also not be reached through her legal representative.
