Waste 'kingpin' gets bail

Welkom - Welkom businessman Gavin Brasher received conditional bail of R50 000 in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The court found that it would be in the interests of justice that Brasher be awarded bail, as he had convinced it he was not a flight risk.

The court also held that Brasher had no intention to influence a State witness by contacting him.

Brasher was arrested on Monday on charges of threatening and intimidating State witnesses in the medical waste matter.

The court held that there was no substance to this charge or to allegations that he was involved in a planned assassination or conspiracy against a former business partner.

The case was postponed until April 7.

Brasher faces several charges pertaining to the discovery of a huge amount of medical waste dumped at one of his businesses.

Medical waste was also found illegally dumped at three other sites.
