Watchdog probing cop killing

Johannesburg - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the shooting of a metro police officer by a policeman, it said on Tuesday.

The shooting took place at 19:30 on Sunday, while Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD) officers were responding to an accident, said IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini.

"The driver was allegedly drunk and metro police officers, in a marked EMPD vehicle, decided to take him to Pholosong Hospital for a blood test," he said in a statement.

"It is alleged that upon their arrival at hospital the suspect... drew his own gun and started shooting at the EMPD officer [and] she was hit on the back of the head.

"The suspect then ran away."

Metro police officer Popi Simphiwe Maseko died on the scene.

Dlamini said the man was later identified as a 28-year-old Brakpan police officer.

He handed himself over to the police on Monday.

He said the man was expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of murder, attempted murder and escape from lawful custody.
