Johannesburg - Water cuts are on the cards for eThekwini municipality residents in KwaZulu-Natal, according to a notice published on the city's Facebook page.

"URGENT NOTICE: We will continue to monitor the water consumption over the course of the week and should the situation not improve, we will then be left with no option but to impose water curtailment," the municipality said.

The message was posted on Friday.

The city also posted a list of the areas and establishments that could be affected by water "interruptions" on a daily basis. This included La Mercy, Sibaya Casino, King Shaka International Airport, Verulam CBD, Dube Tradeport, Ndwedwe, Oaklands and farms along the N2 freeway.

The Independent on Saturday reported that at an emergency meeting earlier this week, the joint drought planning committee, agreed in principle to institute a “time of use” curtailment measure to stop Hazelmere Dam from falling to 35 percent, which is the lowest it can go to before water supply reaches its most critical stage.

On Friday the dam was sitting at 40%.

The committee is made up of representatives from Umgeni Water, eThekwini municipality, iLembe district municipality and Sembcorp Siza Water.
