Cape Town - The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will not support the call by Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille to educate residents about portable flush toilets, the Cape Times reported on Thursday.

"We will not be taking the mayor up on that call because we do not agree with the way she is rolling out the sanitation programme in the Western Cape," SAHRC spokesperson Isaac Mangena told the newspaper.

"There are several issues we don't agree with, like the fact that she claimed people are happy to use the bucket system... the bucket system has to be eradicated completely."

De Lille said on Wednesday that some residents refused to accept the city's portable flush toilets and chose to rather use the bucket toilet system.

She said the city could not compel residents to accept them.

SAHRC chairperson Lawrence Mushwana would reportedly meet with the mayor to discuss her sanitation programme.
