Bloemfontein – University of Free State vice-chancellor Jonathan Jansen vowed to hundreds of students on campus on Wednesday he would do everything in his power to help those who can't afford tuition fees.

He said he was proud of the manner in which students conducted themselves in the past week during the #FeesMustFall campaign.

Jansen was responding to a memorandum of demands - including help for needy students, the removal of apartheid-era statues and the end of outsourcing - that was handed to him by students earlier this week.

On the removal of the CR Swart and MT Steyn statues, Jansen said the Student Representative Council should "bring a proposal and argue why the statues should be removed, and then we can take that to council".

Jansen also said children of outsourced workers were able study for free at the university.

"What we do at the moment is that workers who are outsourced, are trained, and their children can also study for free," he said.

One of the students who attended the meeting later complained about slow transformation, saying they had no faith in Jansen to drive transformation.

After the meeting, the vice chancellor offered students private one-on-one discussions.

On Tuesday, students marched to the institution's main building to hand over their memorandum of demands which they described as their "burning issues".
