Western Cape floods claim a life

Cape Town – One person died and another was missing as floods wreak havoc across the Western Cape, according to reports.

ENCA reported that one person drowned and one had gone missing while travelling on a bridge in Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch, when their car was swept away by floods on Friday.

Another family was rescued, on the same bridge, after their car flooded, eNCA reported.

Western Cape rescue services were on high alert, after the SA Weather Service predicted two days of severe weather.

On Friday evening Vergelegen Medi-Clinic in Somerset West had to be evacuated after the Lourens River overflowed flooding the hospital.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said during the operation, the team also assisted with the evacuation of nine people, who were forced to find shelter on their roofs when their homes were flooded.

Lambinon said: “There was major flooding of residential and business areas of the Somerset West and flooding of roads, with some areas where even street stop signs were buried under water.”

The province’s Disaster Risk Management were providing relief to flood victims and have embarked on a clean-up campaign.
