Johannesburg - A man is missing after he was swept into the sea in Hermanus, Western Cape, on Sunday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

"The 68-year-old man had reportedly been standing on rocks with a 43-year-old friend from Mitchell’s Plain," NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

"They were taking photographs when they were swept off the rocks and into the surf by a wave. The 43-year-old managed to get out of the water, and has confirmed that his friend disappeared beneath the surf almost immediately and has not been seen since."

An extensive search for the man has not yielded any results, Lambinon said.

Police are investigating the incident. “Police have not released the name of the missing man as efforts are made to locate his family." Lambinon called on the public to be cautious around the coast as the cold front brought dangerous sea conditions.

"Extreme caution is advised particularly to anglers fishing from shore, boaters, paddlers and bathers. We urge the public not to venture along harbour walls where waves could sweep over the walls," he said.
