Western Cape to build 81 schools

2012-07-26 20:48

Cape Town - The Western Cape will get 81 new schools in the next three years, the provincial public works MEC Robin Carlisle said on Thursday.

He said "brand new" schools would replace many school buildings that had fallen into disrepair.

Schools would also be built in areas with rapid population growth.

The total budget for school infrastructure in this period would exceed R3bn.

"That is an enormous increase on, historically, what has been spent, and it will be a massive boost for the Western Cape economy," Carlisle said.

The national education department would lend a helping hand in the form of R750m, as part of its "Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative".

Heated debate had been raised around the recent proposal to close 27 under-performing schools in the province.

Carlisle said there was a process of "building recycling" happening all the time, dependent on various developmental planning factors.

Education MEC Donald Grant emphasised that schools were being shut down to make way for better opportunities.

"[Pupils are] going to a better school, that is better equipped, with better resources," he said.

"What people do not realise is this is going to be an annual process [of shutting down unproductive or ancient schools]".

Carlisle estimated that 20 000 jobs would be created in the building of these schools, of which 6 000 would be for youth and 3 000 would be for women.

DA - well done the only party looking after its (and the Easten Capes) learners. In anc provinces school books are dumped and burned - that is the "caring" party: "Together we can do more.......to keep education away from the children of this country"..... DISGUSTING HYPOCRITES

Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative... where I ask, after three years on a waiting list to enrol my son at Tafelberg High School in Seapoint, he was accepted and has been there for three years now. Problen is the old school building was in disrepair and it was decided by the Western Cape education department to relocate the school to Bothasig with a brand new school building, great we live in Bothasig, but wait, then the bombshell is dropped that the new building is smaller and does not have the same amount of classrooms as the old building had, therefore grades 9 and up will have the size of the classes downsized and the learners who they can no longer accommodate, will have to find another school to attend. Keep in mind this is a "special" school which specializes in remedial tutoring. Where the hell is one supposed to find another remedial school that actually has place for these kids. I find this whole story of building new schools absolutely absurd as they have been building schools but not big enough to accommodate the western cape's requirements. This school has spent money on a "gym" for teachers and big screen tv's that staff use to watch sport events etc etc etc. Where the hell are they looking after the interests of the kids and what the hell happened to every childs right to education. The DA in my opinion has got no clue what they are doing when it comes to supply and demand in the education department.

Once again a divide and rule strategy by the DA. Now it's not dwindling enrollments or poor performance but old buildings that needs to be addressed. Wmo does the MEC think he fools? Are the WC government for instance going to replace Beavilon Sec in Valhalla by a new schoolbuilding or because of poor academic performance and/or the decrease in leaenernumbers? \r\nHe also wants to shut down schools in the rural aras where you'llfind the poorest of poor communities, but he is not talking about new schoolbuildings. He is thinking yet again of the dangerous learner transportsystem.\r\nWhy didn't the MEC announce these plans before he announced the closure of 27 mainly coloured and black schools? He doesn't have a plan how to run education in the WC and use bullying tactics on the poorer communities and only aim to satisfy the needs of the priviledge few in the province.

All those schools are going to be built in poor communities. So, I don't understand your comment.

Where do you you get your facts? Pointless ANC TROLL!!

Proof of the pudding is in the eating. So far the DA has not done enough for my vote. I wont vote for the current fools, the ANC, but I just dont see enough done for the poor to convince me that they should have my vote. We need real change, not just colour change in government but real change where the super rich that run the government are bought to heel.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-07-27 10:54

piet, the only place the DA can make a difference is in the Western Cape. They govern no where else, so I am not sure what you expecting... Once the DA is voted into more places then we can start measuring them eefectively. But from what I see in the WC, they have my vote!

New statistics are out and shows that the WC's economic forecast looks better than that of the hole country!!! Businesses are seeing the good governance in WC are employing people!! They were the only province last year to drop their unemployment!! WELL DONE DA! AND REMEMBER PEOPLE......THE DA IS ONLY MARGINALLY BETTER THAN THE ANC NOW BUT REMEMBER IT TAKES ABOUT 2 YEARS TO FIX FINANCE PROBLEMS AND THEN IT GETS BETTER!!!! AAALLLLL THE ANC SUPPORTER WATCH THIS SPACE.......IN THE NEXT 2 YEAR WC WILL BE THE BEST RUN PROVINCE IN AFRICA. HELEN ZILLE DIDN'T WIN THE MAYOR OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR NOTHING...LOOK I AM NOT SAYING EVERY MUNICIPALITY OF THE ANC ARE NOT GOOD....JUST LOOK AT POTCH!!! WELL RUN MUNICIPALITY, BUT BECAUSE THE ANC ARE IN CHARGE OF THE COUNTRY, THEY CAN DO BETTER!!

  • jaun.lombard.9 - 2012-07-27 11:29

It weird to see that in this article were the DA are building 81 schools not a lot of people comment on it, but over 100 comments on the article that states the DA are closing down 27 schools!! WEIRD RIGHT??? ANC trolls just want sensation were the gan get it!!! Typical ANC to make a HUGE story out of something the DA already fixed!!!
