Cape Town - 10 more stun grenades have gone off outside Parliament where angry scenes between riot police and students played out on Wednesday afternoon.

News24 reporter on the scene, Jenna Etheridge, said so far six protesters had been detained.

Another News24 reporter on the scene, Thulani Gqirana, said students were screaming at police asking: "Who are you protecting? We are students. We are unarmed." as well as: "Why don't you let Blade speak to us?"

Students proceeded to shout: "We want Blade," referring to Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

Earlier, students began retreating while singing the national anthem. This after they had gained access to the Parliamentary precinct.

Students have gathered in their thousands to protest proposed fee hikes for 2016.
