Johannesburg - An elderly farmer's wife has been left paralysed after a farm attack in which her husband was murdered in Tolwe, Limpopo, Beeld reported on Saturday.
Doctors have told the family of Gloudien van Rensburg, 65, that she has been left a paraplegic without any feeling in her body from her chest to her legs.
On Wednesday, Van Rensburg's husband, Johan, 77, was shot and killed while he lay sleeping in bed next to her at home on their farm. She was shot three times.
"She looks better than Wednesday. She is calmer and is fighting hard...but she is very critical," her son-in-law, Francois Drotskie, told the newspaper.
Drotskie said she tried to speak with her two daughters on Thursday but could not.
Doctors had to drain blood from Van Rensburg's lungs. She remains at a Polokwane hospital.
She is still under anaesthetic and has had to undergo a number of blood transfusions.
The Van Rensburgs celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary in January this year.
