Widowed gran looks after 17 kids

2012-08-20 10:33

Johannesburg - A 68-year-old Soweto grandmother is looking after 17 children - 5 of her own children and 11 grandchildren.

The Sowetan reported that Lucy Manya, a widow, mostly fed the children from food she scavenged from dustbins at the Maponya Mall.

"Everyone is dependent on me. It was better when some of them used to work. When the food runs out, we ask from neighbours but I would rather pick up food that's thrown away, wash it thoroughly and cook it," said Manya.

Although she received some help in the form of government grants, she is denied more financial help due to administrative problems with the surnames of her and her children.

The family survives on just R1 480 per month.

Of the 5 adult children, one limps, the other is mentally ill and another is epileptic.

A social welfare spokesperson said they would look into Manya’s situation.

Whilst I sincerely sympathise with her plight-why do people continue to bring children into the world when they have no job,are ill, obviously cannot afford them?????? At the end of the day,its the children who suffer. From birth they are doomed to have no future, education or chance of becoming anything other than another grant dependant.

While everyone above bitches, judges and politicises this; could someone please tell me how I could help out this elderly lady? A simple phone number will do...

There are several organisations you could make a meaningful donation to. Use Google. If you pay tax you are already contributing.

yes, i can see you are trying to help but this is just feeding the snake dont you think? Some news24 user wrote a great article about charity(the issues), and this is a case that will most likly not improve till they decide to change(which most likely wont happen). I also want to do good, but imo the money is spent better somewhere else....

JJ_D. While I applaud your empathy I would like to know here the parents of the other children are and hy they are not contributing? I as told many years ago hen I expressed sympathy as you have done to an African woman I worked with at the time not to give anything to people unless they do something to earn it. People complain about the entitlement attitude and the crime hen in reality this mindset has been created by giving people things and asking nothing in return. You teach people learned helplessness. Last Friday I was talking to to a retired Bantu education teacher of 83 - an amazing woman. She said exactly the same thing She has tthree grandchildren living off her pension, two of whom are attending a private school. They refuse to eat traditional food and insist on meat and potatoes and white bread. The third grandchild is qualified and orking for a large National store and contributes nothing either despite the fact that she has a toddler ho lives there and a nursemaid who is still at school and cares for the toddler. The father of the toddler has not contributed a cent either and the mother behaves as though she has no child hen she comes home. All on Granny's pension. Granny is no fed up as is son to whom house belongs. She says charity belongs in a museum. She is right.

She needs help accessing the +- R5480 that is available for her plus birth control. The biggest problem is more and more girls are deliberately falling pregnant to get the R280 child care grant. They use this as pocket money and dump the kid with mom. When the R280 is not enough it is time for a 2nd child. It needs to be established if anyone is accessing this grant - 11x280= R3080. The epileptic and mentally ill children’s medical history will establish if they are eligible for a disability grant @ R1200 each, they just need to ask the doctor to complete an application form with motivation. Note: all medication for mental illnesses is FREE. The local inkosi or political party (YES they help 1000000's just before the elections) can assist with birth registrations, name differences etc.

Maybe she should look through the dustbin of Luthuli house. She could score a lot of fried chicken, caviar and half empty bottles Moet.

Fornificating like rabbits, passing time. She is one of the many we knows in the township. I have my mother's neighbor with four kidz, three different fathers, not working, 30yrs old. WTF is that???

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-08-20 13:08

Zimbobwe I'll tell you what it is. It's the rubbish fathers ho make no effort to support the children they have fathered. If one tries to garnishee money from them (been there done that for my housekeeper) they leave well paid jobs and disappear into the woodwork. I will concede that there are some totally stupid omen out there who think that falling pregnant is a way to hold onto the man or get him back from a rival and frankly they deserve what they get which is probably a grant that won't feed themselves never mind take care of the needs of a growing human being.

  • simon.mwando - 2012-08-20 11:42

I think this situation, as desperately sad as it is, sums up exactly the number one challenge facing this country....that is, there are too many people. To bring a child into the world when there is little chance that you can provide a life of good quality for said child is reckless, inhumane and dare I say it, abusive. It is also evident that many of the children born are unwanted anyway, the majority are conceived by men forcing themselves on women who have little or no defense against their husband/boyfriend/friend/brother/uncle etc. The women must be given whatever free access is required to avoid these unwanted and unplanned children and men must realise that they are not merely vessels into which the can pump their desires.

      borruso.harvest.7 - 2012-08-20 16:14

Firstly women do have free access to birth control and abortion (which is legal from the age of 12 and parents DO NOT have to be notified). Birth control should be compulsory for the unemployed.

  • Johan De Beer - 2012-08-21 07:50

People should be taxed for having more than 2 children, not given grants. This is just my opinion.

      borruso.harvest.7 - 2012-08-21 12:36

      I totally agree
