Johannesburg - A 68-year-old Soweto grandmother is looking after 17 children - 5 of her own children and 11 grandchildren.

The Sowetan reported that Lucy Manya, a widow, mostly fed the children from food she scavenged from dustbins at the Maponya Mall.

"Everyone is dependent on me. It was better when some of them used to work. When the food runs out, we ask from neighbours but I would rather pick up food that's thrown away, wash it thoroughly and cook it," said Manya.

Although she received some help in the form of government grants, she is denied more financial help due to administrative problems with the surnames of her and her children.

The family survives on just R1 480 per month.

Of the 5 adult children, one limps, the other is mentally ill and another is epileptic.

A social welfare spokesperson said they would look into Manya’s situation.
