Johannesburg - A 45-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly murdered his wife at their home in Ventersburg in the Free State, police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Inspector Malebo Khosana said police were called to Mamahabane on Saturday and found the lifeless body of the 27-year-old woman.

"Her face was badly swollen and covered with blood. On investigation it was found that she was assaulted and strangled with bare hands," said Khosana.

The motive for the killing is still unknown.

"The man will remain in custody until his first appearance at Ventersburg Magistrates' Court on December 1. Investigations are continuing," said Khosana.
