Durban - A KwaZulu-Natal court heard how a teenager bragged to friends about a video clip of an alleged rape he had recorded, comparing it to a notorious child pornography clip.

A friend of Darren Mogany, 18, told the court that the accused had showed him a video of a girl being assaulted with a beer bottle on 30 July 2010, reported the Daily News.

Mogany is on trial for raping the 19-year-old and distributing the pornographic video.

The friend testified that he and a group of boys watched the video and said he had asked Mogany to send him the clip because he thought it was funny.

But when the friend showed it to his girlfriend she became upset, shouted at him and deleted it.

The victim appeared to be asleep in the video and the State alleges that she was drugged and too weak to defend herself.

He said Mogany appeared to be bragging and kept saying “Phoenix 2” while boys around him were laughing and encouraging him.

Mogany was referring to a pornographic video featuring a 15-year-old girl from Phoenix that was circulated in 2009.

Mogany and his brother-in-law Adish Deonarain, 25, pleaded not guilty this week to three counts of rape and four counts related to child pornography.

In explaining why she didn’t go to the police immediately after the incident, the girl’s mother said: “Deep down you know you have to go to the police. But when you see a video like this, it is devastating.

“Everything you know doesn’t make sense. We didn’t know how to deal with it.”

 The trial continues.
