Johannesburg - Wits classes will remain suspended on Monday after being hit by protests over fees last week, the university said.

Wits university spokesperson Shirona Patel said all academic activities will remain suspended on Monday to allow the university's council to report to the university assembly and deliberate on the matter.

Patel said the council met on Sunday to discuss their agreement to suspend the 10.5 % tuition fee hike and they would then meet with the student leaders at noon on Monday to report back on the meeting.

Over 100 Wits university students gathered at the Senate House on Sunday to discuss their agenda coming for the Monday meeting, SRC president Nompendulo Mkatshwa told News24.

According to the university statement: "Following an intense and protracted engagement between protesting students and members of the Executive Committee of Council, it was agreed that the university would suspend the decision on all fee increments made for 2016. There will be no fee increments until negotiations reach an agreement."

The statement also said the no disciplinary action would be taken against students or workers who participated in the protest.
