Wits students boycott Israel

2012-09-03 16:08

Johannesburg - Students at the University of the Witwatersrand say they are adopting an academic and cultural boycott of Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

A statement on Monday says the school's student representative council is calling for an immediate investigation into any academic, financial and cultural relations with Israeli institutions.

The University of Johannesburg last year became the world's first to impose an academic boycott on Israel, ending its relationship with Ben-Gurion University.

South Africa's government angered Israel three months ago by issuing instructions that goods imported from Israeli West Bank settlements not be labelled "product of Israel".

Many South Africans equate the Israeli treatment of Palestinians with the former apartheid regime.

OK how about a follow through for proper Justice. How about boycotting the rest of the world for their anti-semitic stances, for persecuting the Jews and for the various pograms in York, etc and the "Final Solution". Selective Justice is no justice!

  • joseph.motloung.3 - 2012-09-03 16:43

As a student myself I am so proud of the moral stance taken by the students of Wits. I always thought that South African students are too concerned in bashes and parties and oblivious to the sufferings of the people of Palestine. Finally the future generation is realizing and recognizing the zionist regime for what it truly is namely a racist, murderous xenophobic regime. I am proud to say that my institution has nor formal relationship with the Apartheid state

      ashne.segal - 2012-09-03 16:57

You are off your rocker my friend - Israel is not an Apartheid State - where did you suck that from? Get a life - Israel is one of the most democratic countries in the world and as for the rest please go and read the history books!

      carl.lutzer.3 - 2012-09-03 17:34

Joseph , a student of a primary school I guess....

      andrew.arnesen - 2012-09-03 20:18

Seems a lot of people have been getting a very one-sided history of Israel... Oh, btw, internal politics is not the same as that same state's foreign policy... Israel might be democratic internally but they are systemically decimating lives and for that they need to make answer. And, as far as I am concerned, in terms of the violence, it is a chicken egg situation with no side able to claim any higher moral ground... But the insanity has to end.

      jaba.kov - 2012-09-04 15:44

Israel must be the only so-called ''apartheid '' country in the world where an Arab can become a high court judge and become a member of the Knesset. Not to mention all the Ethiopians and other Africans who have been given asylum in Israel. It would also be the only country in the Middle East where two gay, Muslim men can walk down the street and not be stoned to death literally. Now tell me - how many blacks in South Africa during apartheid were members of parliament or high court judges? The silence is deafening isn't it?

Did "the students" actually say this, or was it the Communist/SASCO/MDM/ANC-YL hydra hi-jacked student government that has fraudulently issued this statement on their behalf. I'll be my bottom dollar that it's the latter. SRC get back to your proper jobs - creating a fun and vibrant student life on campus. Please refrain from abusing your position in order to make ridiculous statements that you can never back up with any data whatsoever.

      stevie0064 - 2012-09-03 17:06

I remember when I was a student that the SRC inevitably tended towards an over-inflated importance of themselves. Mind you, that was back when national politics had free reign to insinuate itself into academic institutions where, in my opinion, it didn't belong.

      seanrossouwslr - 2012-09-03 17:09

      jaba.kov - 2012-09-04 15:47

. intelligence and attitude of the academics the academic society of SA appears to be be blind to the facts of the middle east where palestinian arabs have refused to accept peace on any terms except complete destruction of israel and all the jews being killed. The result is the palestinians have not contributed one positive thing to the world stage or humanity in the past 63 years while Israel continues to contribute on every stage helping mankind and humanity. Maybe if the palestinians refrain from rocket fire and terrorism and actually have corrupt and fanatical leadership that doesn't steal all the foreign aid then they maybe could stop eating out of the cesspool they dig for themselves

  • rick.kabose - 2012-09-03 16:52

OOH wow. The students who are the drop out candidates are calling for a boycott.Woopee, but i'm afraid that the students who are studying and are going to pass and make the big bucks are in all likelyhood sympathetic to Israel. So lets see,the poor drop outs with empty pockets and rhetoric,or the money spinners.Hmmm I think Israel cares less.Hell , i'll even volunteer for their airforce if they were attacked by the arabs again, that's if these boycotters will volunteer for the arab side,"kill me some indigenous Sans,Yeah"

Israel is the Holy land and this land and its people are still blessed by our Father in Heaven. Who dares to go against Israel? Who can stand against the King of all kings and thinks that he will succeed?

      vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-09-03 17:27

That's the problem with some jews and many stupid non-jews. They are not the chosen people. They hide behind ancient fairy tales and thus feel entitled. The so-called god of vengeance and brimstone and other violent stuff is not in charge. Get that straight.

      teddy.beer.319 - 2012-09-03 17:50

Christian Zionists fail to understand that Israelis are mostly not Christian! They believe that the Christ stuff is hogwash. They only tag along with you because it suits them, but as we speak they are still waiting for their Messiah to Jesus who is the Christ. Bibi believes he is the messiah, just maybe. Your God of Israel is different from theirs and your King is totally a charlatan to them! The bible version of events leading to the death of Jesus is correct even today. Instead of hanging Him, they could possibly today attach him to a nuclear weapon and blow him in the heavens for all to see. Wake up.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-09-03 18:18

Essentially, they also want armageddon and rapture, aligning their interests with Zionists who want to bring about the coming of the messiah.

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-09-03 17:18

I think that this is extremely stupid, by all involved as I am sure they do not know what an intellectual boycott of Israel will involve. Firstly if Palestinians want to they are more than capable to label their own goods as made in Palestine or Gaza or whatever they want, nobody is actually stopping them from doing this, everybody should understand that they are actually free to label their goods anyway they choose. As for boycotting Israel intellectually I would like to challenge these Wits university students to live up to their foolish endeavor. Throw away your computer! Most computer operating systems were developed by Microsoft-Israel. The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed at Intel in Israel. Both the Pentium 4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were entirely designed, developed, and produced in Israel. Voice mail technology was developed in Israel. The technology for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ was developed in 1996 in Israel Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R.& D facilities outside the US in Israel. Get rid of your cellular phone too! Cell phone technology was also developed in Israel Most of the latest technology in your mobile phone was developed by Israeli scientists. Let us not even start on the Medical patents owned by Israel, because some of these brave boycotters would probably be dead already if it was not for Israeli scientist and doctors, everything from heart stents to medicines used for the common cold.

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-09-03 17:37

Come Wits Students Let us see you live up to your brave call, I do not see Israel not sharing their expertise with the world, their knowledge... Israeli influence and technology is in almost every modern appliance, radio, television, you name it and ten to one, Isreal has been involved in it's development, so where does that leave WITS Go on switch off your computers let us at least start with that..... Ohhhhh.....wait, I do not see the Palestinians or any other Arab countries doing this..... is the ARAB SPRING (ZUCKERBERG Revolution) not due to the help of FACE BOOK...... developed by a JEW if you want to educate yourself before switching off your computer, go find out more at this link. http://www.takeapen.org/Takeapen/Templates/showpage.asp?DBID=1&TMID=84&LNGID=1&FID=583&PID=877 OHHHH, then we have Google,(switch off) Yahoo also not to be used (if you are to boycott Israel) ohhh and then anything Android....will also be out of bounds.... no Camera pictures, photographs, home printing, dvd's or going to the movies.... No pods/pads and or 'mixit' Israel owns patents on all these devises and somewhat more...

      joe.mase.7 - 2012-09-10 02:45

You use German technology don't you.I'm sure Israel imports ALL the beautiful German cars... then perhaps you should stop using Arab technology that help you develop your WMD; E.g. Algebra from Al Jabr..

  • liyaaqat.james - 2012-09-03 17:26

After reading the commencne i must say the respondence was from the whites in suburbs who dont realize we see the racism in their commentry ISRAEL stole PALESTENIAN land what is wrong when WITS students want to boycot ISRAEL

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-09-03 18:20

I for one say Boycott...if you must, but then do it properly, and don't just come and give the rest of us face value, why are you still on your computer, get off if you want to realistically boycott Israel, then you and your friends must get off your computers, and switch off your cell phones, radio, television..... why don't you..... because you all big talk... All talk....like a big poooop into the air. The real way to change things in the middle east is engagement through peaceful means, as allowing Arabs to use Face Book,(THE ARAB SPRING) encouraging dialog, understanding and modernization of thoughts and believes and cooperation. If you wan't to support Palestine at least go visit them there as a tourist, go get to know them, and then at least go do the same in Israel and get to know them then when you have done this, you will have more grounds to stand on.... this intellectual boycott of Israel is a bunch of YADDDA Yaddda Yaadddaa..... all talk no action. Hot Air....from the Anus..

      stevie0064 - 2012-09-04 08:43

@liyaaqat.james I don't think I would actually call it racism per se, but we find whatever divisions we can when there is a political motive and we drive a wedge through it. If I were to care enough to boycott that troubled region I would boycott both the Israelis for breaching their 1948 agreement AND the Palestinians for using indiscriminate weapons against civilians (i.e. terrorism).

  • teddy.beer.319 - 2012-09-03 17:35

If Israelis do not listen to the voice in the world regarding Palestine, they will surely be a very lost state. Who can stomach their arrogance and sheer inhumanity to the Palestinians? Palestinians are 'terrorists' they say. Terrorizing who? And why? If you steal my land, bar my freedoms, jail me without trial, bomb my wife and kids, reduce me to a barrowing animal to get medicines to my family; you want me to smile at you? Surely not. I will fight you even with muti. The excesses happening in Palestine make us stop and think, 'are not the same people who were victimised in Europe?'. Its a shame and totally repugnant to the conscience of right-thinking South Africans. These people supporting Israel's actions from here after escaping the draft there have no clue as to the life of an average soldier in Israel. I am the angriest man in Southern Africa today!

      glen.e.huysamer - 2012-09-03 21:17

Ohh please my dear teddy bear let us face the fact that Israel have always been a very isolated country, a world boycott is not going to make any difference On the contrary, and it is not going to force Israel to do anything it does not want to do.... it has not until now and it won't in the future. So blowing your righteous little horn without investigating the reality on the ground, is aching to proclaiming you are 'green-conscious' but your transport burns fossil fuel. There are many Palestinians living peacefully in Israel, as Israeli they vote, they serve in Parliament they live free... Most Palestinians in GAZA and the Westbank----were originally tossed out of Jordan and Egypt, their own Arab brothers don't even want them in their countries they have been offered their own independence numerous time, most of their financial aid comes from Israel so before you and I or anybody start mouthing off here in South Africa I will put it to you this way.... The Palestinians are like some 'Afrikaner Boers' (Not that really equates to anything) asking for their own homeland.

  • John Peter Steyn - 2012-09-03 17:39

From what I have read of the Israeli government's treatment of the people of the Israeli occupied West Bank the treatment is certainly similar to that of Apartheid and like the old Apartheid government the Israeli government needs to be brought to its senses.

  • jaba.kov - 2012-09-04 16:02

This is a letter to the body that’s wants to boycott Israel from a fellow student: Dear Wits. i have a few things id like to share with you from a few sources about your "Israel Boycott". Factually speaking there is no apartheid in Israel and never has been. If you look at Israel's attempts to resolve the conflict versus the Palestinian authority and hamas's unwillingness to recognize or negotiate with Israel then one can only point to blind hatred. If these accusations were factual I'd think there would be a leg to stand on. I'm not negating what has and is happening in Israel and the surrounding areas but the Palestinians have been mistreated equally or even more so by their "brothers" namely Egypt, Syria and Jordan(let's not even get into Iran). It’s a sad state of affairs of how fellow Arab nations have treated the Palestinians, much worse than Israel. Go on YouTube and check out Danny Ayalon's videos describing fallacies of the conflict. Until they stop firing rockets into Israel 24/7(FACT) Israel cannot stop defending themselves! Unfortunately you choose what you want to listen to and you seem to only listen with one ear WITS. There are bigger issues than boycotting a country with the most amount of starts up per capita, highest per capita Nobel prize winners and more companies on the NASDAQ than Europe and Asia combined!!!

      jaba.kov - 2012-09-04 16:03

Just because you feel like they treat the palestians the same as the old apartheid government treated blacks. Arab Israelis are valued members of Israeli society. They have jobs, go to school, part of the Olympic teams etc.. It completely baffles me how you can feel sorry for the ones on the other side of the borders constantly firing rockets into civilian areas killing women and children while Israel only seeks out those who intend to harm them. FACT. So all you WITS students jumping on the bandwagon of this ridiculous boycott should look a little closer at the actions and consequences of the misinformed leaders they follow blindly into self defeat. It’s a scary thought but If Palestine had to put down their weapons, there would be peace. If Israel were to do the same. there would be no Israel. I appeal to you students, do your research! Think for yourselves!! Watch more than one news source!! Listen to both sides!!! Embody the academic qualities Wits was MEANT to instil. Search for truth, justice and peace. but that’s just my thoughts. I will not be participating in the boycott. Thanks anyways. im gonna now get back to work and use the necessary technologies some of which built by intelligent, hard working, Israeli scientists, engineers, and designers who are constantly making our world better, safer, and healthier. Peace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGYxLWUKwWo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_3A6_qSBBQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAuBc_cbXo0&feature=relmfu

Go to Israel and SEE and LEARN for yourself. You will be very pleasantly suprised to see how people are living side by side. Everyone wants the same: Job, food, family, house. Its easy to sit and shout and comment from afar about something you know very little about. Its very dangerous to learn and support only one view point. Open your mind and look at both sides. You may suprise yourself.
