Woman, 82, raped in KZN home

2012-07-31 16:58

Durban - An 82-year-old woman has been raped in her house at Mambedwini section, in Swayimane, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

"The woman was in her home when an unknown man overpowered her and raped her on Saturday at about 21:00," Captain Thulani Zwane said.

He said it was not clear how the man entered the woman's home. No arrests had been made.

The woman was raped just a week after a 94-year-old woman was raped in her home in the same area.

A 25-year-old man was arrested last Monday in Wartburg for raping the 94-year-old. He appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of rape.

how screwed up must you be to do this to a woman. I liken rape to Animal behaviour, but mind you not even animals rape. so it must be a SUB HUMAN that rapes. show me a rapist and he wont forget that he met me.

Until there is a justice system in this country, which gives due punishment for the crime comitted, these crimes will continue! The "thing" who did this is not human!!! How the hell does an 82 year old EVER recover from something like this? Sadly that is why mob justice sounds so good!

Cry the beloved country, that these dastardly deeds r a daily occurrence n shame on u sa that u can't protect ur vulnerable n fragile citizens! Ur 'best' constitution is so useless in this regard

  • CassandraXabata - 2012-07-31 18:54

Raping a woman is always an expression of anger or power. Usually these perpetrators are cowards as they will avoid confrontation with any of the male gender. I often wonder how much is projected by raping the constitution, the earth by mining illegally or without water rights or even the general good of the populace by ignoring stop streets, driving too fast, stealing, riding the gravy train, poor manners etc etc. Perhaps we should relook at the values our ancestors subscribed to....

      dee.980 - 2012-07-31 19:14

Good point Cassandra. Rape is (generally) rage of powerless-ness - and how very weak and powerless these rapists of children and Gogo's must be?? I don't have a solution - but the truly vulgar degree of opulance that our leaders display as symbols of 'success' is surely 'un-African', or at least out of step with the economic conditions of our society?! It makes me feel powerless and enraged - and I am not part of the indigent people who see no hope of things ever changing for them. Evo Morales (1st 'indigenous' leader of Bolivia) inspires me when he e.g. reduced his salary by >50% to less than $2000 per month; addresses his nation with words of national VALUES: "Let us not measure our success by just GDP and posessions, but our ability to live in harmony with eachother and with Mother Nature". Bolivia also has a Bill of Rights for Mother Earth - animals, plants etc. (They don't get fed and vote on empty promises!) And what does Sanusi Credo Mutwa say of the leadership of our troubled society? He is a man dying of a broken heart I think.

      CassandraXabata - 2012-07-31 19:43

@dee.980 Agreed. We need to keep expressing a return to good citizenship, exposure of family and friends who do not live by such a code. We must stop tolerating mediocre and lipserving leaders. Shame them into compliance to leading in moral ways. Love to see a lot of old people and young children walking for freedom from harrasment and intimidation. Or is it easier to rant about economic freedom when we do not have freedom from sexual harrassment!?

      Bless Boswell - 2012-08-01 07:11

You have hit the nail on the head. You know the term urban decay? When you look around and everything visible is in ruins, debris, broken windows, graffiti ...? Well, morals are going the same way - moral decay. When parents have no control, for whatever reason, they work, cannot spend time with their kids, or they die, or they simply dont care, there is no moral value passed on to the children. The present adult population has lost the plot - children cannot raise themselves and imbue themselves with good moral principles and sound judgements. The children are our future. If they cannot take their lead from us how can we expect them to thrive? They see junk on TV, see incidents where they live and come to accept that as being the norm. I think our young people - especially the ones from needy communities are fast becoming a lost generation - they don't have meaningful role models so they cannot aspire to rise out if the mess they are in.
