Johannesburg - An 86-year-old woman was raped in Rosemore, George, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

The woman was awoken by the sound of breaking glass at a bedroom window at about 02:00 on Saturday morning, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

"She went to investigate and found the suspect walking straight towards her."

The man allegedly confronted her, ordered her to lay down then raped her, whilst covering her mouth with his hands.

He then allegedly left the house and threatened to rape the woman's granddaughter, who stays in a bungalow in the back of the yard.

The elderly woman alerted neighbours, who contacted the police.

The man fled the scene.

"The only description we have at this moment is that the suspect is a coloured man, who is short," said Pojie.
