Butterworth - A 24-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend to death with an okapi knife in Skiet informal settlement in Butterworth after he would not give her a cigarette, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

The woman allegedly stabbed her 32-year-old boyfriend on Thursday night. He died instantly, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

"Police were reliably informed that the motive for the murder is that the deceased allegedly failed to give the suspect a cigarette so that she can smoke.

"Police also recovered the okapi knife that was used in the commission of the murder," he said.

The woman was still there when police arrived at the scene.

She is expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder.
