Johannesburg - A woman was allegedly assaulted during the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) strike on Wednesday in Rustenburg, North West police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said a 25-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted around noon after she allegedly knocked down a 43-year-old male pedestrian.

"The woman was driving towards her office where the streets had been blockaded and she was re-routed."

A group of protesters allegedly followed the woman's vehicle after the pedestrian was knocked over.

"They smashed the windows of her vehicle before removing her and allegedly assaulting her."

Two police officers who were monitoring the protest intervened and took the woman to the local police station.

"Her vehicle was overturned by protesters."

Ngubane said a case of malicious damage was registered regarding the damages to the woman’s vehicle, and a case of reckless and negligent driving was registered in connection with the accident in which the male pedestrian was injured.
