Johannesburg - Western Cape police were on Sunday searching for a man who allegedly attacked and injured an elderly woman with a garden fork in George.

The 66-year-old woman was attacked on Friday in her house in Hope Street, allegedly by a man she hired to do her gardening, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

She was doing the washing in the bathroom when he attacked her "for no reason at all".

"She had to fight him off after he had hit her several times with the fork. The woman sustained facial and body wounds during the attack."

The man ran away. She was able to get out of the house and a passing police patrol came to her aid.

She was in a serious condition in hospital. Police urged anyone with information about the crime to contact them.
