Woman bound with ropes for 9 months

2012-07-27 07:42

Johannesburg - A couple was arrested on Thursday for allegedly holding a young woman captive in their Eshowe home for the past nine months, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

During her ordeal she gave birth, but the baby either died later, or was stillborn, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said in a statement.

"[Police found] a 24-year-old woman, bound with ropes, lying in a room. It is alleged that the young woman had been held captive since November last year.

"It is suspected, from communicating with the victim, that she may be mentally challenged."

Woman fell in love with boy, 17

Police found her purely by chance, while looking for a 44-year-old woman allegedly involved in a plot to kill the local traditional leader (induna), and the gun that was to be used.

They went to her house, but found only her 58-year-old common-law husband. He was arrested for possession of dagga.

The 24-year-old woman moved to Eshowe in November last year.

"She met and fell in love with a 17-year-old boy who was a herdsman in the area. He left in December not knowing that he had impregnated her."

Police found the baby buried in the couple's yard. It was born on July 15.

The 44-year-old woman was later arrested in Eshowe. She would face charges of kidnapping, murder, and attempted murder.

The young woman was taken to hospital. Arrangements would be made for her to receive trauma counselling.

‘A demonic act’

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the woman had no access to medical care during her pregnancy.

"This was a demonic act and the perpetrator must be given the harshest sentence permitted by law," Ngobeni said in a statement.

The 44-year-old woman would appear in the Eshowe Magistrate's Court on July 30 on charges of kidnapping, murder, and conspiracy to murder.

Mdunge could not be reached to get clarity on why the woman was held captive, or the charges the man would face.

Hey Pieter, that's the beauty of this continent of ours man. You have this great mixture of the modern and the Biblical. In New Zealand they still herd their sheep - except that they do it with quads and motorbikes and sheep dogs.

@Thomas...I have never seen one animal tie up another animal or person willingly or unwillingly. This is not an animal, its just a very sick demented person.Chances are not having a religeon as well, even if people dont believe in religeon it can still teach you about kindness, love and peace.

It is amazing what certain animals among humanoids are capable of. Pure act of undiluted wickedness and stupidity which must not go unpunished. This being South Africa all I can say is that there are certain of our provinces that are capable of doing things beyond human credibility. Dagga, helping people love brainlessly since days in memoriam. Did they find the gun?

pls hang the 44 year old woman, dnt you think she also needs counselling.

  • gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-27 17:07

This is a very confusing story News24! a 24 year old woman was tied up with rope for 9 months because she was pregnant. A baby was buried in the yard of a house where she was found. Who tied her up? Was it the dagga smoking man of the house or the 44 year old woman? Why were they looking for the 44 year old in the first place? If the herdsman was 17 and didn't know he had impregnated her ... How do we know the dagga smoker didn't impregnate her or even whether the 44 year old woman was the one who gave birth to the baby? A very disjointed story altogether but sadly a young woman of 24 who is thought to be mentally disturbed has lost 9 months of her life and a baby likewise.

  • maryke.peacock - 2012-07-27 17:38

Twenty years ago my dad, a farmer in Eshowe, found a young mentally disabled man chained to a tree in the rural areas, where he picked up the farm workers. After calling the police, it was found that he was kept this way by his own family, believing he had demons and was bewitched. I dread to think how many of these poor souls exists this way with no-one knowing. Only education can destroy these beliefs.

  • alice.tompa - 2012-07-27 19:50

Let the perpetrator rot in jail!

  • vincent.vinsaint - 2012-07-28 08:17

I think the 58yrs old dagga smoking has a lot to do with pregnancy of the 24yrs old mentally challenged.
