Polokwane - A woman was critically injured when her car hit a cow near the Vaal River in the North West, paramedics said on Sunday.

The accident happened on Viljoen Street between Potchefstroom and Viljoenskroon near the Vaal River bridge late on Saturday night, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said.

"Common cause indicates that the vehicle struck the animal which had wandered into the roadway," he said.

Netcare911 paramedics arrived at the scene to find the woman in a critical condition.

"She had sustained severe head trauma and medics immediately set about stabilising her."
