2011-12-08 19:42

Amanzimtoti - A woman was in a critical condition on Thursday and her husband seriously injured after an out-of-control car crashed into nine vehicles at an Amanzimtoti shopping mall.

Netcare911 paramedics said the woman had been crushed between two cars. Her husband had been in their car when the accident happened.

"Mall staff and security had rushed to the accident site and were attending to the injured and securing the scene when we arrived," said Netcare's Chris Botha.

He said the woman had been taken by helicopter to Netcare St Augustine's Hospital in Durban.

The driver of the car which had veered out of control, an elderly man, was not hurt in the accident.

Crumpled remains of the vehicles were scattered across the parking area.

I think this is probably one of the best comments on N24 for a while. Nice of you not to put the old gent down Swapie.

Excuse me bbut just how flippin fast was the guy going to cream 10 cars?? When I was in Toti afriend was fined for driving 20k/hr when the limit at the shopping cente was 15.

A guy in corolla was reversing an he had a fit or blanked out,hit 2 cars, then tried to drive away from the scene then hit another 7 cars..9 cars in total. 1 african lady is badly injured.

Just shows how screwed up reports get. I once read "If you hear 2 'eye witness' accounts of an accident, you begin to wonder how much of history can be believed".

I saw the aftermath, it was horrific. You couldn't believe the devastation. Cars where written off. The elderly man was flying apparently, there are skid marks all over the car park. The story at the scene was that he blacked out, but I don't know because how do u change gears if u have a blackout after he hit all the cars and stuffed up both the front and back of his,he got out to lift the bonnet to see why it wouldn't go anymore. I took some photo's but they don't show the magnitude of the damage. I wish the lady well, she was screaming.

thats .... really strange. people past the age of 70 should not be on roads, reason being , an elderly lady was driving across 3 lanes on a highway without any indicators ... its not the 1955's anymore you know

  • Vivian - 2011-12-08 21:22

OK I dunno but the article makes no sense at all, it starts with where the woman was crushed in the car, and all of a sudden his wife appears, I have to see this but its more frequented at pubs and the woman are pissed

An african lady was about to get into her car and was crushed between two cars, her husband was already in the car waiting for her and the man that slammed into them all was an elderly indian man, he hit 9 cars in total and not just a bumper bashing, the windows where out of most of them. Hope this helps.

They must start testing people older than 60 every year and make them pass the doctors. Every day I see old people making stupid errors in the traffic. They are the ones in the big old camry's and mercedes cars. Make them buy small cars that is easy to control or maybe they afraid that from all the shaking the small cars will fall apart.

      Michelle - 2011-12-09 08:04

That is probably a wise thing for them to do. I have witnessed 2 incidents in parking lots this year. One old lady was reversing and went into my car, but she didn't take her foot off the accelerator just kept revving into my car. When I asked her what was wrong she said she had a bad turn and then the other day an elderly lady drove straight into the shopping mall from the parking area and took out the new Nissan on display. She could very easily have hit someone - she also must have had a bad turn 'cos she was going at a hell of a speed and could not stop - maybe confused the brake with the accelarator. I feel desparately sorry for these people because the lady who rode into may car said she had no-one else to do her shopping for her so it is a catch 22

Age has got nothing to do with it. I have seen young people doing more stupid things than older ones. If you have heard of Sarel v.d. Merwe you might know what a brilliant driver he is and he's 64. Yes 64.

      timmy.ditsele - 2011-12-09 08:10

Sarel v. d. Merwe cannot be compared with any one the reason being he is a PROFFESIONAL DRIVER.period
