Woman dies as protesters block ambulance

2012-05-08 18:36

Johannesburg - Police were keeping watch on service delivery protests in two villages in North West on Tuesday afternoon.

Spokesman Brigadier Thulane Ngubane said protests erupted on Monday in Southey, the villages outside Ganyesa, and in Molopo, outside Vryburg.

"In Molopo, residents burnt down a bus, stoned police vehicles and some even stripped naked a soldier and stole his clothes. The situation was tense on Monday evening," he said.

"In Southey, the situation is volatile. A woman died because the unruly hooligans blocked an ambulance from getting to her while she was giving birth on Monday evening.

"The condition of the baby is unknown."

Ngubane said police were investigating claims that community members were plotting to destroy government property in Southey.

"No arrests have been made, but we expect to make many arrests soon. Police have been deployed and will stay in both areas to monitor the situation," he said.

Ngubane said roads in the areas had been blockaded and police vehicles stoned.

  • Multi - 2012-05-08 19:20

make arrest BUT ARREST THE IDIOTS WHO CAUSED THIS PROBLEM!!! They are responsible for that mothers death!!! Put the government officials responsible in jail!!!!The idiots who blocked the ambulance is like animals...they act the way they have been fed from their boss.

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-05-08 19:24

Heartless people, who one can not call human beings....they should all be charged with murder....but they will get away with it....and that's exactly why they keep behaving like barbarians.....to think a child might growup not having ever have known his Mother ..because of these uncaring people.

  • Fourhundredkg - 2012-05-08 19:28

Surely these people should be regarded as "terrorists" instead of "protesters"?

      SarcasticAgnostic - 2012-05-09 20:04

"Don't come here with those imperialist tendencies. We are called freedom fighters."

  • daniel.motlhatlhedi - 2012-05-08 19:35

I dont knw what is wrong with our people its in their rights to protest but it doesn't give them the right to cause harm to people and damage property. My brother was a victim of that protest his car was stoned windows broken and car is damaged and he is stil traumatised by the incident as h is lucky to get out alive nd unharme physically. I am saden by the news that an innocent sick person lost a life from this incident.

  • rtrecia - 2012-05-08 19:35

Shocked this people are evil.wonder if they sleep at night

  • Rob - 2012-05-08 19:39

Charge those people who 'blocked' the Ambulances path with 'Culpable Homicide'. Let's trust that the poor, now 'motherless' baby is fine. When she gets older and asks where her Mother is, what does one say?

      Lacrimose - 2012-05-08 19:50

...especially when the perpetrators could be members of her own community

  • ngermishuizen - 2012-05-08 19:50

and our politicians spend their time on models talking trash istead of dealing with REAL issues!

  • Piet - 2012-05-08 19:52

This woman died because of the ANC's empty promises....

      Rodney - 2012-05-09 20:18

Thats bull, much as i dislike the ANC government, anger over empty promises is NO excuse for this kind of behaviour. People who behave like this are savages, no more no less. Protest as much as you like, but keep it peaceful or the impact is lost. Killing innocent bystanders, destroying property won't get you what you want any faster. Voting the ANC out will.

      Rodney - 2012-05-09 20:38

I will however add that it is the ANC who taught these people to protest violently to achieve their aims. I guess they thought it worked for them back then, so why not carry on now. Chickens came home to roost and the ANC are powerless to do anything about it, so in that sense, yes they are to blame, their get out clause, as ever, will be that it was the white mans fault in the first place. round and round we go, where does it stop, nobody knows.

  • maseratifittipaldi - 2012-05-08 19:52

Dolus Eventualis : If one is aware that one's action, or lack of action, can lead to death, and one carries on regardless, then, should somebody die as a result, one will be guilty of murder. ( Jacob Humphries ) Why did the people protest? Why was this not controlled ? Why was the mother not given protection? In view of the above, somebody (in government, it seems) should be charged with murder. Condolences to the family and friends of this tortured mother. May the baby grow up to be strong.

  • izak.greyling - 2012-05-08 19:55

What do you call people doing this. Can you call them human?

  • nhla.prv - 2012-05-08 20:05

Fire the damn MP for the area. Its his direct fault.

  • gemmaleigh.evans.3 - 2012-05-08 20:09

Shameful and absolutely horrific!!! Shame on these people!! Charge them with culpable homicide...honestly!! And to do this to a member of their community...a fellow human being who did them no wrong!!

      Martin - 2012-05-09 08:21

      it never ends,,,

  • Pule - 2012-05-08 20:13

I'm residing in the greater Taung district about 49 km from Vryburg,DA is dominating that municipality I'm wondering why are you blaming ANC.Before you insult me I'm neither ANC supporter...

      Donovan - 2012-05-08 20:57

I'm not sure where you got that idea from but the Greater Taung District is an ANC dominated area. In-fact, the entire North West Province is pretty much dominated by the ANC at the moment with the exception of larger towns such as Lichtenbeg and Potchefstroom.

      Pule - 2012-05-08 21:07

Yes Taung is dominated by ANC.But Vryburg is dominated by DA.

      gemmaleigh.evans.3 - 2012-05-08 21:50

I'm actually wondering how anyone else but these individuals are to blame. Yes, they are protesting due to valid issues with their municipality, however if its at the cost of a fellow sufferers life...what kind of people are they?! Sometimes I honestly feel that the SELF-DESTRUCTIVE natures of protesters is what makes them all the more deserving of the circumstances they live with. Those people had no respect for that woman, for their community or their property and so no respect for themselves. So how does one respect people who don't respect themselves...and how can any government be held responsible for the personal nature of all its civilians?

  • Johann - 2012-05-08 20:42

It shames me. It does. Third world country.

      sabongam - 2012-05-09 09:23

I'm certainly not defending those who blocked the ambulance resulting in this poor woman's death and possibly her baby. These protests are as a result of frustartion due to lack of service delivery from the govt.Despite that it is no way justifable to result in death...This however is not because this is a third world...If that's a fact then the UK is a third world country.Remember the England riots of 2011 where a few people died and many more injured? Almost 2-billion rands worth of damage was caused because of looting and arson attacks on homes, business and govt property...Now,is that first world behaviour, Johann?

  • meshvic - 2012-05-08 20:48

Alternative route, another ambulance, siren, helicopter, police escort, water canon, etc... I don't believe there was "no other option" given that ambulances have radios.

  • Phepishi - 2012-05-08 21:03

Are we becoming a befuddled lot?

  • Robyn - 2012-05-08 21:31

It blows my mind how the Government (or RATE payers) must provide for people who do nothing for themselves except breed like flies and live in squatter- these people live in their own filth- why don't they get together as a community and make a difference to their environment. They would rather throw litter to the ground, burn busses and schools and other items given to them instead of working for it.

      Orapeleng Edgar Monnaoapula - 2012-05-10 08:49

then politicians shudnt go to such areas during campaigns nd make such empty promises...why give them HOPE?

  • Lerato - 2012-05-08 21:43

\In Molopo, residents burnt down a bus, stoned police vehicles and some even stripped naked a soldier and stole his clothes\ was this a real soldier or a Salvation army official

      desertratbkf - 2012-05-09 08:47

WTF would someone from the Salvation Army be doing there? Do you even know who they are? Retard!

  • AdeleFHM - 2012-05-09 08:01

Please make that arrests! this is unacceptable barbaric behaviour and justice needs to be served. Condolences to the family..

  • ramsine1 - 2012-05-09 19:45

I am not saying that what these people did was right but that is what this country is coming to. If we can eliminate corruption and reduce poverty less people would need to be so cruel. This should be an eye opener for the government hopefully they will act accordingly
