Woman dies in botched hijacking
Johannesburg - A botched minibus taxi hijacking in Durban's Chesterville township left an elderly woman dead on Thursday evening, paramedics said.
"A white minibus taxi was about to be hijacked when the driver took off down the road, allegedly to get away from an unknown number of men that were shooting at him," ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said in a statement.
The taxi sped off, knocking down and killing a woman on the side of the road. It collided with another elderly woman a few metres away. She sustained several injuries.
The taxi continued down the road, hit a lamp post, crashed through a fence and the wall of a home before coming to a halt in the lounge.
"The male driver, of unknown age, was allegedly shot a number of times, and was rapidly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment by a private vehicle, before the emergency services were called."
The injured woman was taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
