Johannesburg - A 64-year-old woman was stabbed to death by a young boy on Sunday during an attempted robbery at a farm outside George in the Southern Cape, police said.
It is believed the 16-year-old boy gained access to the house at Dagbreek farm through a kitchen window just after 02:00, said spokesperson Malcom Pojie.
The noise woke Charlotte Sroneman, who'd been sleeping. When she went to investigate, she was repeatedly stabbed in the chest, allegedly by the young man, said Pojie.
The commotion woke her husband, who'd also been sleeping, and he took his firearm before going to investigate what was going on in the dining room.
A fight ensued with the teenager and he was also stabbed. He, however, managed to fire several shots, wounding the intruder.
"The suspect was shot on the right side of his face and on his shoulder. He tried to flee, but he was arrested by police not far from the house," said Pojie.
Charlotte was declared dead at the scene while her husband was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
"The suspect is currently at a provincial hospital under heavy police guard," said Pojie.
