Johannesburg - A woman was killed in a house fire in Sonlandpark, near Vereeniging, on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

An elderly woman, 82, and her daughter, 57, were in the house when it caught fire at around 01:00, ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said.

Neighbours rescued the mother. They failed on a first attempt to get to the daughter, who had recently had an operation and was immobile.

"On a second attempt they pulled her out of the house, but tragically, the woman had already succumbed to the fire and smoke."

Attempts to resuscitate her failed.

"She was pronounced dead on the scene, with multiple and extensive burn wounds to her head, neck, back and chest area."

It was believed the fire started at the back of the house. The cause was not known yet.
