Woman dies in truck collision

2011-01-27 22:56

Johannesburg - Gauteng paramedics said that a young woman had been killed in a collision on the N3 at the Heidelberg Road off-ramp on Thursday.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said: "It's believed that the woman was driving onto Heidelberg Road from the N3 in the direction of the Alberton off-ramp, when the truck collided into the passenger side door."

Jackson said after the accident the vehicle spun around and was left "extensively damaged" on the passenger side, as well as the front.

"The woman was trapped in the mangled wreck and had sustained multiple fatal injuries."

Jackson said the woman was declared dead at the scene and fire and rescue workers had to cut her body out of the car using the jaws of life.

The driver of the truck was left with no physical injuries.

Traffic was backed up on the Heidelberg Road in the direction of Alberton as the accident took up all three lanes.

if they used a hammer or an angle grinder instead of the "jaws of life", would reporters mention that too? it's just another tool!

Yes it IS just another tool, but it is the tool used to remove victims trapped in vehicles. One wouldn't use an angle grinder because of the sparks/fuel/explosion threat. Would you prefer that the press said "they had to cut her body out of the car?" without mentioning the "jaws of life"? Then you'll get some people who are not as educated as yourself asking "what did they use?" From my point of view, the "jaws of life" is a great invention and should be given whatever glory it can get.
