Johannesburg - A 60-year-old woman was raped and murdered in Tigane township in Hartbeesfontein, North West police said on Monday.

A 35-year-old man had since been arrested for the murder, which took place on Sunday night, Captain Pelonomi Makau said.

The woman had been drinking with a relative in another part of the township and asked to be walked home around 22:00.

"According to the information, the suspect volunteered to accompany the victim but instead of accompanying her to her place, allegedly took her to another room, raped and stabbed her several times with a knife at the back of her head, then dragged her outside the house," said Makau.

On Monday morning, neighbours saw the woman's body lying outside the suspect's house and called the police.

"He was the last person to be seen with the victim and his clothes had blood stains on them," said Makau.

The man was arrested and charged with rape and murder. He was scheduled to appear in the Hartbeesfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
