Woman duped in money boiling scam

2012-05-03 22:06

Johannesburg - An Eastern Cape woman was duped into believing her cash would grow by boiling it in chemicals, police said on Thursday.

Two men approached a shebeen owner in Tyiweni Location, Dutywa, on Wednesday and told her they could make her rich, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

The men, aged 38 and 45, asked her for a R10 note. She borrowed one from a relative, and gave it to them.

"The suspects mixed the money with certain chemicals and boiled it," he said.

They returned with three R10 notes, each with different serial numbers.

Manatha said the notes were later found to be "very high quality forgeries" which, "given to an unsuspecting person, they would not know they were fake".

"The 46-year-old tavern owner was then told to withdraw R1 000 which would be cooked and would become thousands of rands," he said.

"It is alleged that she withdrew the money, but before it was cooked police were tipped off about the scam."

The men were arrested and would appear in the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Friday, said Manatha.

      Florence - 2012-05-04 09:37

To all the EC Shebeen Queen sympathizers and the Einsteins, I guess u never heard of da saying 'Do not judge a book by its cover'. Hence I had to get the content of da story which really didn't add up to me to be worth publishing. I see nothing offensive in raising my comment, nor reading da crap story. Sorry Einsteins of yesterday I still feel strongly that this story worth publication at all.

      Florence - 2012-05-04 10:11

@Paul the Great philosopher, graduate from MXit. I am not gonna be apologetic about poor quality on journalism. That is my position - finish and klaar. So u may philosophize whatever for all I care...

Yet another case for better infrastructure and with that access to information. Information about such scams is available and widely-reported, what are the national, regional and local govts doing to fulfill the last mile - getting information to people?

  • yolande.rwaai - 2012-05-03 22:35

If you're dumb enough to fall for these scams then you deserve to be duped. There's no such thing as easy cash, you have to work hard to get money. Greed won't get you anywhere!

      Koos - 2012-05-04 01:20

      It gets you into parlament.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-05-03 23:25

This is a clear message that there are many people out there that need to become more streetwise. It is these gullible folk that allow themselves to be duped into voting for the wrong party. I wonder how the ANC feels about having a following of gullible, very naiive people who will never be able to live meaningful lives because their "saviours" have abused them.

  • Ayavuya - 2012-05-03 23:26

Wow! What a misleading headline! The woman was not 'duped' at all

      koo.doyle - 2012-05-04 07:32

How so? After all she withdrew the cash. If she fell for the scam, regardless of whether it was successfully executed, then she was in fact duped?

      Rodney - 2012-05-04 10:26

Of course she was duped! If it weren't for the police getting the tip off, she would be out of pocket.

  • Frank - 2012-05-03 23:28

Only idiots can multiply that easily, not money. Just look at JZ and his 21 children...

  • Freddy - 2012-05-03 23:33

      Koos - 2012-05-04 05:03

If you vote for the ancESTORS, do you do it to spite the whites or yourself? The ancESTORS will have supporters as long as there are money to pay for grants.

      Marius Smit - 2012-05-04 07:11

And as long as there are stooped comments like this, black people will continue to vote anc.

      Charmaine - 2012-05-04 08:35

I don’t see how your comment makes you more intelligent than a rural woman (who has her own business, by the way!)? This article should evoke a response of empathy for people who were left out of the education system not give fuel for a racist attitude (which is the highest level of stupidity!). However, that said - so called educated westernised people have been duped by Ponzi schemes and others. These comments do not make us part of the solution but part of the problem. Peace!

  • Noluntu - 2012-05-04 00:32

Like seriously? Are you really that ....... to fall for this?!!!

  • Koos - 2012-05-04 01:20

.......drumroll...... She threw her money in the water. No pun intended... Really?? Actually, it wasn't even her R10. And R10 hardly qualifies as money these days. Thanks news24 for yet another pointless article and misleading headline. You are getting good at it.

  • mopsy04 - 2012-05-04 07:03

Whoever wrote this article needs to have a psycological evaluation, what kind of journalist writes such rubish? as for the shebeen owner... Its actually sad some of the stories that come out of the Easten Cape these days... the govt should consider putting a huge fence around that province and performing mandatory IQ tests before allowimg anyone outta there
