Mhlabunzima Memela, The Witness

Durban - A woman has described how she tried to shoot her way out of a hijacking incident in Pinetown, inadvertently injuring a passenger in a vehicle in the next lane.

Kerrie Hudson tried to shoot two hijackers when they attempted to take her car at the intersection of Anderson and Old Main roads just after 17:00 on Monday.

However, Khetho Gwala, who was travelling in a minibus taxi, was struck in both arms and was rushed to hospital.

Hudson, speaking through her lawyer Jacques Botha, said she was very upset by the incident.

She said she regretted that the wrong person was injured.

“My client was robbed in broad daylight. And she has been the victim of robbery twice now. These thugs took her cellphone and ripped the chain from her neck,” Botha said.

Crime hotspot

A police source on Wednesday described the intersection of Anderson and Old Main roads as a crime hotspot.

On Saturday, Rasheree Sunpersadh, 39, and her husband Suren, 45, were robbed while they waited for the lights to change at the same intersection.

Rasheree said three men were crossing the street when two of them suddenly approached her side of the car. The car windows were down.

“One reached into the car and placed a knife at his [Suren’s] throat while another man reached in and switched off the car,” she said.

“Our cellphones, cash and my husband’s iPod were stolen,” said Rasheree.

She said a good Samaritan saw what was happening and, gun drawn, shouted at the thugs to stop.

“He could not fire any shots because it is a busy area. They took our things and fled.”

The couple were in Pinetown to collect their travel documents from the department of home affairs.

Asked what was going through her mind during the incident, Rasheree said, “I only thought about my two boys. Life is more important than objects and money. I’m grateful that we survived but it was traumatic.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Bongumusa Manqele said several similar crimes had been reported at other intersections in the area.
