Johannesburg - A woman in her 20's drowned near Clifton in the Western Cape on Sunday, the NSRI said.

"Bystanders noticed the female sitting on the rocks on the shore throughout the morning when it appeared that she had gone into the water in what they suspected was to cool down, although fully clothed...but she then appeared to get into difficulty on the rocky shoreline and had attempted to get out of the water over the rocks," spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

The woman was then seen floating face down in the water and being swept away by rip currents.

"A bystander jumped into the water and brought the female to the surface, a group of people attempted cardio pulmonary resuscitation [CPR] on her before emergency personnel arrived."

The woman was declared dead on the scene by paramedics after all efforts to resuscitate her failed, Lambinon said.
