Pretoria - A man allegedly robbed a little boy of R30, assaulted the boy's mother with a garden fork several times, raped her and then kidnapped her.

He then gave the victim's cellphone to his wife as a birthday gift.

This suspect was apprehended on Thursday morning while he was working in the garden at his house in Letlhabile outside Brits.

The victim's cellphone was in his possession.

The 35-year-old mother says she burst into tears when Warrant Officer Annerie Robinson, of the Akasia police station in Pretoria, called to tell her about the arrest.

Officials from the Pretoria North police station assisted Robinson with the arrest.

"Annerie said she had just arrested him, his hands are cuffed and she's taking him to prison. She said I can rest easy again," said the victim.

"It felt better than winning the Lotto. Now I want to go home and tell my son the man has been caught.

"If my little boy is able to sleep again at night, I'll be the happiest person on earth."

Out on bail

During the attack on July 24 in The Orchards in the north of Pretoria, the attacker kept demanding money from the woman and her 7-year-old son.

The boy told the attacker he had R30 in his wallet. The attacker took the R30 before assaulting, raping and kidnapping the mother.

She jumped from the moving vehicle. She can't remember the attack, but was discovered next to the Mabopane highway (R80) outside Pretoria with a broken right arm and right leg and a broken jaw.

The attacker fled with her cellphone, among other things.

He gave the cellphone to his wife as a birthday gift, and also continued to use it himself.

This cellphone lead the police to his house on Thursday morning.

He denied everything to the police. According to him he bought the cellphone from a man he had run into on the street.

The alleged rapist has just been released from prison after spending two weeks behind bars as a suspect in a trespassing case.

He was released on bail in the Brits Magistrate's Court last week.

Dikatso Thebe, police spokesperson, said the 38-year-old man will appear in the magistrate's court in Pretoria North on Monday, on charges of rape, house breaking and theft.
