Johannesburg - A woman was seriously injured in an 18-car pile-up after a truck lost its load of polypropylene balls on the N3 at Hammarsdale on Thursday, paramedics said.
Around 14:15, the balls spilled across the Durban-bound carriageway and cars were unable to avoid them, ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said.
The polypropylene balls caused "an effect similar to aquaplaning" and 18 cars crashed as a result.
A woman travelling in one of the cars suffered neck and back injuries. She was taken to Hillcrest Private Hospital in a serious condition.
