Johannesburg - A woman who suffocated her son and burnt his body because she wanted to hurt her former husband has been sentenced to 18 years in prison, The Star reported on Thursday.

The sentencing of Maliepetsane Precious Mokoena took place in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, on Wednesday.

She was also handed two years for malicious damage to property and six months for assault, which would run concurrently with the 18 years.

On 13 January last year, Mokoena suffocated her 8-year-old son, Lehlohonolo Magatikele, while he slept. She then loaded the body into her car, drove to nearby suburb Dawn Park and burnt it on the side of a road.

"He was sleeping peacefully when he was killed by his mother, who was driven by the desire to hurt her former husband and stop his new wife from bonding with him [the son]. His life went out violently," said Judge Ndawoyakhe Tshabalala.

"Even in my naivety, I can't imagine his body writhing underneath the pillow, struggling to breathe. Nothing can justify or excuse Mokoena's actions against Lehlohonolo."
